I included a pic below for those interested. I'm a shade over 6'. If you looked up 'average athletic ability', you'd see a picture of me at least me 40 years ago. Even I could get 6" over the rim and I could grab the rim with both hands. We didn't have a women's bball back then, but I could dunk a men's ball IF you took a little air out of it to make it easier to palm. Never dunked a regulation bball. It's one of my few regrets in life. If you took my reach into account and the " I could get above the rim, that would mean I had to jump somewhere in the 30" range, off of 1 foot with a running start.
Not exactly how they measure vertical leap. I would imagine the best athletes are the ones who can jump off a 1 step off 2 feet jump, and I bet that's the scale that the previous poster had up there. There's no way I would rank as that much above average with a 30" vertical. I think there's a huge difference between a running start,1foot method and the 1 step, jump off 2 feet. I could only touch rim jumping with a 1 step off 2 feet method, putting my vertical about 24".
When I was in my 20's and still able to easily get rim, I thought there never would be a day when I couldn't do that since it was sooooo easy. That day came pretty quickly. I lost a bunch of weight when I was in my late 30's and the last time I touched rim was when I was Start New Topic. There are plenty of proven and effective vertical jump programs out there that can add anywhere from inches to your current vertical jump.

Once you start getting closer to 6 foot tall dunking starts to become a little easier to achieve. At this height you will need to jump around 23 inches to touch the rim and 29 inches to dunk a full sized basketball. To be able to dunk at this height you will need to follow a combination of weight training and plyometric exercises.
