Your energy company bases your bills on them. Making sure that your energy firm has recent meter readings is the key to getting accurate bills or keeping your direct debit in check. Many in-home displays will also show your meter readings you may need to scroll through the menus to save you going outside or into a tight cupboard to access your meter.

Smart meters enable your energy supplier to record your gas and electricity use remotely. Energy companies are aiming to install smart meters in all homes.

All gas and electric meters should clearly display a set of numbers showing your energy use to date. This might be a digital display, rotating dials or clock-style dials.

We recommend that you submit meter readings every month, or every three months as a minimum. Take a note of the reading and date it was taken. Or take a photo of your meter. In the past, energy suppliers had to read your meter every two years. This rule was scrapped in See other ways save money on your energy bill.

Prepayment meters require you to top-up before you can use gas and electricity. In the past you had to go to a shop to top-up your card or key, or to buy tokens. You added the credit to your meter by inserting your key, card or tokens into the front of your prepayment meter. Reads Submit a meter read Read your own meter. Identify your meter type. The meters below are 'basic meters'. These meters need to be physically read at the meter.

Find your meter. Most meters are outside: Attached to one of the external walls On the front porch At the rear of your house. Some meters can be inside: In the hallway near the front of the house In other hallways In the laundry In the garage Under the kitchen sink. If you live in a multi-dwelling building, your meters will probably be together in one place.

This could either be in the: basement carpark, or in a cabinet on your floor. If you live in NSW, your meter could also be under your kitchen sink. The reading for this meter is: If you're in front of the meter, read each dial from left to right. Helpful hint: the dials alternate in direction. If the pointer is between two numbers, note down the lower number. The only exception is if the dial sits between 9 and 0, you should note down 9.

If the pointer is resting directly on a number, look at the dial to the right. If this number hasn't passed 0, then the original dial hasn't passed the number yet and you should note the lower number.

The reading for this meter is: Read the meter from left to right, including all the zeros before the numbers. If a dial is between numbers, record the lower number.
